This site contains information for those interested in Cytopathology, Biomedical Science and Laboratory Management as well as a general overview of cytology and its history

The site was created by Geoffrey James Curran.

I work in the Division of Cellular Pathology at the Barts and The London NHS Trust as the Cytology Advanced Biomedical Scientist Practitioner. The cytology laboratories, local PCTs and call/recall agencies associated with  Barts and the London successfully participated as a pilot site in the first wave of the NHS Improvement 14 day turn around project, a summary of our progress can be seen in this Trust press release.

The Department works closely with The St Bartholomew's and Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, of Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.

I have a degree in Food Science obtained at the University of Nottingham, am a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and hold the IBMS Diploma in Medical Laboratory Management. I have obtained the Advanced Specialist Diploma in Cervical Cytology and am also a Chartered Scientist.


I am a portfolio assessor for the Registration and Specialist portfolios on behalf of the Health Professions Council for the IBMS and I am a peer assessor for CPA uk ltd. I am  a member of the Government Advisory Committee on Cervical Screening, a guest lecturer at the University of East London  and the Domain Lead for the Clinisys Cytology users' group.

On 18th September I ran in  a 5km fun run for the London Air Ambulance, the web page for donations is still open can be found at Virgin Money Giving.
